Christie Wins Okinawa

Jason Christie took out the 2015 Tour of Okinawa last Sunday after stealing away in the closing kilometers to take the victory solo.

An intrepid break of 3 took the initiative at the start of the day and quickly gained time. By the 60km mark they had built a 20 minute advantage over the rest of the peloton who were clearly banking on them not surviving the distance. At the top of the races first KOM the peloton had eaten up a significant portion of the breaks lead and with 120km to go they were only thirteen minutes in front. As the distance and terrain started to take it’s toll a group of nine including Jason moved off the front and with only two of the original three still remaining this break was where the real racing was going to come from. A chase group of six more including Mark O’Brien playing policeman managed to bridge across giving a lead group of seventeen with 35km to go and with most of thebig teams represented and they quickly pulled away.

The boys put all their eggs in the “Christie” basket with Marko riding hard at the front to discourage attacks and wear down the break. At 10km to go the lead group was down to only 12 riders with Marko still riding the front a Jason getting an armchair ride, waiting to pounce. At the 5km to go sign the attacks were coming thick and fast with Jason away in a with three others. A big attack out of that group saw Jason take his chance and while they looked at each other and tried to decide who would commit Jason went for home. In the end he had enough time to celebrate in style taking a great win and netting a great result for the team in their first time to the Island.

A big thanks to Luke Fetch for his DS expertise. Not a bad record for a young gun!
